It might be a fashion "don't" to wear wide horizontal stripes but as far as I'm concerned it's a Living in a Nutshell "do." I noticed that in the various small, nutshell spaces that I called home through the years I just never got tired of stripes.

And in my new apartment charcoal stripes break up the dark walls and create a sense of dimension to the small space. The striping is also the perfect backdrop for my paintings and art work.

I think my green leather side chairs won their stripes with my favorite pewter striped pillows

Just like layering a good outfit, I decided to tie-in the entire living room by layering my shag area rug over espresso striped wool dhurrie rugs. I found them on sale at Williams Sonoma home for $179.99 each.

They only had the rugs in 5x8' so I bought two and hand-stitched them together where the edges were exposed and used carpet tape down the middle where the rug was covered. I had to rush and get the room ready for a housewarming party so that was a quick fix tip. Shhh-hh, don't tell.
